Mulch

Mulch is created form recycled wood materials from around the Heide property. Mulching practices enhance soil and retain moisture; they also aid in cutting costs though disposal or woody debris and eliminating the need for buying mulch in.

There are four reasons why mulch is an important ingredient that nurtures the garden (ABC Gardening Australia, 2014):

  • •   Retains moisture and stop the soil from drying out
  • •   Prevents weeds and weed seed germination, which compete with plants for water and nutrients
  • •   Keeps the soil temperature constant
  • •   Adds extra organic matter to the soil when it breaks down, improving soil structure and drainage,
  •     encouraging earthworm and microbial activity

  • Focus questions:
  • Where have you seen mulch used around Heide?
  • Why is mulching good for the garden?
  • In what ways does Heide’s mulching contribute to sustainable ways of living?
  • What else could be used as mulch?
  • What would be the benefits and weaknesses of using rocks as mulch?
